A Celebration of Black Excellence: My Visit to the Black Women’s Expo

Visiting the Black Women's Expo was an amazing privilege. I was able to witness the opening ceremony with remarks from Merry Green and state officials. This was my first time attending the Black Women's Expo, and it did not disappoint. Immediately when you walked into the space, you were greeted by smiles, warmth, and Black excellence. There was an atmosphere of joy and celebration that could be felt from the moment the doors opened. Every conversation, every booth, and every person I encountered reflected the power of community and the importance of uplifting one another.

The celebration kicked off with honors being bestowed upon Merry Green and the incredible legacy she has built over the past thirty-one years. It was inspiring to hear so many leaders recognize her vision and dedication to creating a space where Black women could gather, grow, and thrive. Throughout the opening ceremony, every Black woman who spoke emphasized the importance of paving the way for future generations. Their words reminded everyone in attendance that success is not just about individual accomplishments but about creating opportunities for those who come after us. They encouraged us to continue breaking barriers, supporting one another, and ensuring that young Black girls can see themselves represented in every industry.

As I explored the expo, I had the wonderful experience of connecting with three beautiful young Black women who were helping at a vendor booth called Words of Wisdom. During our interaction, I learned about their passion for spreading the Word of God throughout the expo while building genuine relationships with other creatives and entrepreneurs. Their excitement was contagious, and it was refreshing to meet women who were so intentional about combining their faith with their purpose. They spoke about encouraging people through simple conversations and creating opportunities to remind others that God can use anyone to make a difference. Our conversation left me feeling encouraged and reminded me of how powerful it is when people boldly walk in their calling.

Another group of women I had the opportunity to speak with shared their mission of creating safer healthcare experiences for Black women. Listening to them discuss the disparities that still exist in healthcare opened my eyes to the work that continues to be needed. They were passionate about advocating for Black women to be heard, respected, and properly cared for throughout every stage of life. What stood out to me most was that they were not simply talking about problems, they were actively creating solutions by educating women, providing resources, and building trust within the community. Their dedication reminded me that entrepreneurship can also be a form of service and advocacy.

One of the things that impressed me most about the Black Women's Expo was the incredible variety of businesses, organizations, and professionals represented. From beauty brands and wellness companies to authors, healthcare professionals, nonprofit organizations, and entrepreneurs, every booth had a unique story. It was inspiring to see so many Black-owned businesses thriving while also creating opportunities for networking and collaboration. Whether someone came looking for business connections, health resources, career advice, or simply encouragement, there was truly something for everyone.

Although thousands of women traveled from across the United States to attend the expo, no one felt like a stranger. There was an overwhelming sense of belonging that made it easy to start conversations with complete strangers. Everyone was willing to share their stories, celebrate one another's successes, and offer encouragement. That sense of unity is something that is difficult to describe unless you experience it for yourself. It reminded me how important spaces like this are for building community and empowering future leaders.

Merry Green has faithfully kept this vision alive for thirty-one years, and it is incredible to see the impact it continues to have on countless women and families. Her commitment to creating a space that celebrates Black women has grown into a legacy that reaches far beyond Chicago. I cannot wait to see how the Black Women's Expo continues to unfold and blossom in the years ahead.

My hope is that more young Black women will have the opportunity to experience this expo and the meaningful connections it creates. It is more than an event, it is a celebration of culture, faith, entrepreneurship, leadership, and community. Walking through the expo reminded me that representation matters and that seeing women who look like me succeeding in so many different fields is both inspiring and empowering. I left feeling encouraged, motivated, and grateful to have witnessed such a beautiful display of excellence. The Black Women's Expo showed me what is possible when a community comes together to celebrate, support, and invest in one another, and that is something I will carry with me long after the event ended.
